I’ve just come across a tool called IvyGen (Ivy Generator), which is an tool for creating ivy or other plantlife on top of a mesh you’ve created.  I think it’s a fantastic little tool that works well, is free and runs on Mac OSX, Windows and Linux.  If you create any 3D art it’s well worth a download.
